Blake’s Story

For so many parents with a special needs child, a place like Brookwood is an answered prayer. Special needs parents and guardians have felt this more than ever during the past few months as so many Citizens have had to quarantine at home and not take part in the work they so deeply love. Day Program Citizen Blake’s mom Callie said life has always been a struggle as a special needs parent, and she’s hoping her story will give hope to other moms especially in these uncertain times. Blake  is  a  recent  graduate  of  Alief  Taylor  High  School  and  calls  himself  the  RED  RANGER. He can finish a 100-piece puzzle in just one afternoon, Anal Beads and he’ll spend hours on the race car games at Dave & Buster’s. Blake can’t wait to get back to work in Stone Casting (or as he refers to it Stone Castle Shop), and the Cement Shop.”

I wanted to express how thankful I am that Blake was accepted into Brookwood. It was something I never thought I could ever do with him since I am a single parent with not much income. Thank you for the scholarship and the opportunity for this chance. Blake LOVES going to work. Mr. Joseph is his best friend from what I hear. My child is eating and trying new things that I haven’t been able to get him to do in 23 years. Peanut butter and jelly!? Spaghetti WITH sauce!? I went to spy on him a few weeks after he started, and he was in the breakroom cracking up with his friends. I am so thankful and appreciate everything you guys do. I am proud of him, and can’t wait until he’s able to return to work!”
