FINE ARTS

Brookwood Citizens are provided opportunities to practice and showcase their fine arts abilities in many ways, including the Brookwood Handbell Ensemble, acting in plays written and choreographed just for them, singing, playing instruments, dancing (even in their wheelchairs!), drawing, painting, writing and reading poems.

HANDBELL ENSEMBLE

The Brookwood Handbell Ensemble was formed nearly 15 years ago by Linda McKechnie, a world-renowned musical artist.

The ensemble is composed of 15 Citizens who have learned to read music using an adaptive notation system. They play three octaves of Malmark handbells and choir chimes. They have performed for the Houston Grand Opera Gala, the Houston Symphony, numerous churches, private events, and here on campus. They are most well-known for playing the National Anthem at the Houston Astros games!

The Brookwood Handbell Ensemble also collaborates with the Houston Bronze Ensemble, Houston’s premier handbell choir.

THEATER

Citizens have the opportunity to participate in plays throughout the year, including our annual Open House and Family Day. Citizens also build sets, serve as members of the production crew, and welcome guests to the performances.
