Dragonflies & Damselflies

May 16 @ 10:30 am - 11:30 am

$19.95

Come learn about these amazing creatures in your backyard. Bob Honig of the Katy Prairie Advisory Board will present on the life cycle, place in the food web and how to attract dragonflies and damselflies to your backyard.

Dragonflies and damselflies together comprise the insect order Odonata.  The adults’ beautiful colors and easily observable habits have spawned an increasing interest among naturalists.  These raptors of the insect world are important in both terrestrial and aquatic food webs, both as predators of and as food for numerous animal species.  In this presentation you’ll learn intimate details of Odonate mating, including how an individual male best ensures that he is the father of the progeny of the female with which he mates.  And you’ll find out answers to such questions as:  Is it possible to breathe and poop via the same orifice?  Can dragonflies prey on birds?  What is the killer lip?  And what backyard pond features will attract a diversity of Odonates.”
