Nothing rings in the Christmas season like the Brookwood Handbell Choir, just part of the program waiting for you at Brookwood’s Open House! Brookwood is an idyllic place in the country (located west of Katy, at 1752 FM 1489, Brookshire, TX 77423), where adults with special needs work hard year-round creating beautiful, high quality handicrafts and growing thousands of plants – including Christmas Poinsettias, in preparation for their Open House, which will be held on Friday, December 6th and Saturday, December 7th, from 9:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Admission is free and no reservations are required!
This year’s Open House features shopping in the Gift Shop – famous for its amazing Christmas trees and decorations, dining in the elegant Café (with special Open House hours from 10:30 a.m. to 2 p.m.), attending one of the two daily performances of A Brookwood Christmas Carol put onby the citizens of Brookwood featuring the Brookwood Handbell Choir (at 10:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m.) and a tour of the citizens’ workshops and grounds. Shoppers should plan to visit the Garden Center behind the Gift Shop as well, to pick out their holiday Poinsettias! Food samplings, Christmas music and a special menu at the Café will also help to put you and your whole family in the holiday spirit. Come early to the citizen play to get a seat, as this heartwarming performance always draws a full house!
Decorated with designer Christmas trees throughout the store, shoppers will find gifts for everyone on their list, including many items made by Brookwoodians, such as Texas Bluebonnet and Christmas patterned dishware, ornamental fall and Christmas decorations, salad dressings (including sugar-free) and other food items, wall crosses, angels, Christmas cards and much more. The citizens from Brookwood in Georgetown, an extension of the Brookshire program, have contributed handmade necklaces and earrings. In addition to the many handcrafted items for sale, you will also find market items such as silver bowls and trays, wind chimes, stuffed animals, children’s books, kitchen linens, nutcrackers, nativities, designer Christmas stockings, gifts for your pets, food and numerous other items.
For the art collectors in your group, the Gallery at Brookwood features a variety of work from many professional Texas artists, including original paintings, sculptures, wood carvings, pastels, jewelry, and other unique pieces. All artists displayed have been shown in art galleries and some are currently displaying in museums.
For the cowboys and cowgirls on your list, Shudde Bros. Hatters at Brookwood provides a wide variety of western and dress hats, custom styled for each individual. Neal Shudde, hatter for 40 years, is on hand to help you find just the right hat. They also have a wide selection of belts, to make your loved one “rodeo-ready.” The men in your party may also enjoy the “man-cave” environment of the hattery, where they may relax on the oversized couches after shopping.
So start a new tradition this year by beginning your holiday shopping at a place where you may both purchase a gift and give a gift at the same time as all money spent at Brookwood goes directly back to supporting its adults with disabilities. For more information, please call 281-375-2100.
